July Garden Toast
In last month’s Garden Toast, we talked about gardening as a form of body liberation. And I stand by everything I said, but that’s also absolutely an essay I’d write in June. The June garden (here, anyway) is very orderly and well-behaved, in a way that I find so empowering. There are show-stopping perennials like peonies and irises, and everything else is just cute little seedlings, or a delightful green froth of potential.
The July garden though, is something else, because July is when the chaos arrives. A reader recently asked: “How do you deal with perfectionism in the garden?” And it’s an excellent question because gardening can be a dangerous hobby for perfectionists. But the answer is, you meet July and realize…all bets are off.
