We're celebrating our 200th episode with a look back at some favorite conversations about ultra-processed foods, anti-diet workouts, and how we feel about jeans.
I especially like that interview with Martinus. I've got back into running lately and have started doing 5K park runs, in which I tend to lag behind the other runners (an old guy was ahead of me by a minute and joked that I could beat him next time. Lol, thanks). I've had to take a couple of walking breaks, but I'm proud of myself for ending with a run. Exercise is almost feeling like a parttime job - I also do strength training but have been told I need to improve my range of motion!
I'm not really sure where I'm going with this other than exercise sucks at times but I also love it, which makes it even more frustrating! But I do really love exploring movement and taking joy in exercise, after being told I was 'unathletic' in PE.
The only thing I liked in PE was swimming and I was told I was too slow for the swim team and then we stopped going to the pool anyway, so I couldn't even enjoy lessons!
Being from the UK I didn't have to do that, thankfully! Instead, we had this thing called the beep test where you had to run across the gym between beeps on a tape. My only achievement in PE was being the last one running one year!
A good reminder the we often make everything into a “diet” can’t just go for a walk. Maybe I should put on a weighted vest. Maybe I should try to walk a little faster a little longer instead of just enjoying the fresh air, the sunshine and being able to move my body. Enjoying a meal no matter what it is for the fact that I’m able to have the food that I want or need instead of agonizing over. Is it organic are there GMO‘s? Is it highly processed instead of just enjoying it? I love how this podcast reminds me to just enjoy And be grateful.
I love the return of Pants Toast! ❤️ Corinne, did you write about your drawstring jeans in a Big Undies post and I missed it? I love drawstrings for precisely the reason that they make a waistband adjustable and bought and returned four different pairs of drawstring jeans this spring. Please link to your favorite!
Congrats on 200 episodes! I haven't been here from the beginning, but I have liked so many of these since finding you. Two things that jumped at me from this episode:
1, I was also there for the going out top era. I wore it with nice bootcut jeans. I still wear the nice top with bootcut jeans and strategic jewelry when I need to put on what now gets called variations on "the nice, competent adult" look. The skinny jeans are not an essential part of the formula! 😂
2, you have had so many great guests. I was actually going back to the episodes with Laura Thomas last night, because the whole "processed/UPF" discourse was rearing up in another internet space for me. And I LOVE that quote you pulled from Aubrey Gordon today.
Reading Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes was a major light bulb moment for me in giving myself a lot of grace on not being able to track weightlifting progress in a strictly linear way. It's like, yes, my hormonal cycles DO impact my body in more ways than just mood and those pesky periods. There are gonna be days when I just have to do what my body is okay with that day and no more.
I also appreciated that my lifting coach used RPE as the goal, which felt really squishy at first, but eventually came to be something I relied on to remind myself that it's okay that, today, this is harder and I'm still challenging myself even if I'm not lifting more than last week. (Corinne, I'm sure you're very familiar with it, too, but for those who aren't, look up Rate of Perceived Exertion - it's a way to set a target for a workout that isn't just "lift X lbs this week then lift X +5 lbs the next week.")
My husband and I love a “sushi bowl” I made up a while ago - bed of chopped greens (spinach is great!) mixed with warm rice (we love the chewiness of brown rice for this!) and topped with cucumber, pickled ginger, avocado, artificial crab, and any other toppings you’d like! I drizzle with soy sauce and “yum yum sauce” and it’s so good!
Thank you for the East Fork mention! I had wanted a mug in Big Sky but they had stopped offering that color so I figured I had just missed it -- until I saw it in the seconds sale you linked to! Now I have one and drank my tea from it this morning and it brought me some quiet joy with how smooth and bright it is and how it kept my tea warm.
When Corinne suggested a belt, in my head I said, “Shut up, Corinne.” I feel bad for being mean (in my head) but also very much not a belt person. I have so many pants issues. I also have a pair of denim joggers that I feel skirt the line between not jeans and jeans. I very much like them.
Re: Virginia's Butter--Hetty Lui McKinnon has a fabulous easy recipe called Dumpling Salad in the NYT and it is sooooo goood and so simple. It's basically cucumbers + frozen dumplings + a delicious peanut sauce. We ate it twice last week and looking forward to it again soon.
Anyone want to share this so I can get behind the paywall? It looks so good but I don’t have a subscription and lately I have been able to access exactly zero articles for free each month 😭
fwiw, i have "solved"(?) the dressier but not dressy thing for myself with a couple of different pair of us pants; the etta ponte in black, and the....audrey(I think?) in dark green. I did have to get the green ones hemmed which is always a big barrier for my adhd life. and for summer, it is colorful linen pants times.
i've also recently gotten back into belts, though i was a big belt wearer in the 00's too
also corinne has sold me on those socks. i keep clicking them and not getting them and today they are on sale lol. my emotional support this country is a mess socks, apparently
FedEx contacted me and I had to send them a bunch of info about the fiber content and “gender” or the socks. Then they arrived and then a few weeks later I got a bill from FedEx!!! Let me know how it goes for you.
I will be a skinny jeans defender until my dying day! I feel so much more free when my pants are basically glued onto my legs, its like being naked but socially acceptable
Oops, posted too soon! I meant to say, the size 18 plus is really big — I kept one & gave one to my husband. But it’s nice looking, very comfortable, and does an amazing job of keeping my stretched out jeans from falling down. https://a.co/d/9gkF6EJ

Oh god, undoing PE trauma is the work of all of our lives. Love that you are enjoying running on your own terms!
The only thing I liked in PE was swimming and I was told I was too slow for the swim team and then we stopped going to the pool anyway, so I couldn't even enjoy lessons!
Still have nightmares about the Presidential Fitness Test in the 80s! 😭
Being from the UK I didn't have to do that, thankfully! Instead, we had this thing called the beep test where you had to run across the gym between beeps on a tape. My only achievement in PE was being the last one running one year!
Omg the beep test is terrifying!
Great episode

As a society, we really need to stop trying to optimize everything we do. A walk in the sunshine is amazing! A delicious meal is the goal!

I did! Sadly they are no longer available but these look similar: https://go.shopmy.us/p-20656138

Yay! Love Christine Yu, another former pod guest who has contributed so much to the Burnt Toast exercise ethos! Hormones are such a huge factor.
Love your leftovers sushi salad!

Happy 200th! What a fun look back. I have learned so much from you both, and your amazing guests.

i wondered about this! the website claims no issues? tracking says fedex has the order and it is in NJ as of yesterday. we will see :)
FedEx contacted me and I had to send them a bunch of info about the fiber content and “gender” or the socks. Then they arrived and then a few weeks later I got a bill from FedEx!!! Let me know how it goes for you.
so far, no questions from fedex. shipment arrived yesterday, with nothing indicating a bill to follow, but who knows?
Congratulations V!!!

I have these as well — I don’t like them quite as much as the previous one, but they also work ok. https://a.co/d/hLxgjzO

Re belts: Virginia, have you ever tried an elastic belt? I have this one and really like it. I bought the size 18 plus and it’s
