Thank you so much for Dietland. It’s not just a great book, it’s an IMPORTANT book. I connected to the rage at the time (I read it about a year after publication), but now I’m thinking I need to reread it because ye, gods, we are drowning in misogynistic anti-fat bullshit right now. I was so disappointed when the series wasn’t renewed, but I am grateful that it’s out there for us all. Love and strength to you!
How did I not read Dietland?! I'm ashamed of myself, but quickly remedying the situation! I'm still really broke, so borrowed it immediately from the library to read on Libby! Please forgive me, I know I'll love it!!!!!
And thank you so much for this today, both of you!!! <3
OOH, Roxy, I’m excited for you that you haven’t read it yet and have such a delight in store! Like honestly jealous of anyone getting to experience it for the first time. Can’t wait to hear what you think.
That book was OUTSTANDING, and so relatable!!! I was laughing, and also crying, more times than I could count! I'm really, really glad, thankful, and grateful for you having Sarai Walker interviewed on Burnt Toast, Virginia--she's such an excellent author! I just finished her second book, The Cherry Robbers (I rushed to borrow it after reading Dietland!) and I loved that one, too! I can't wait to read her next book! :D
I was so excited to see this conversation. I teach women's and gender studies at Simmons University in Boston, and I taught Dietland in a Feminism and Literture class about five years ago. I was really afraid this book had been forgotten. I'm *so* relieved that's not the case. It's 100% going on the syllabus the next time I teach that class -- hopefully spring of 2026!
Loved this conversation. It's funny how sometimes it's easy to forget there is a real person behind such a canonical text like "Dietland."
Listening to that "Experience" song now—what a delight (might have make this my editing soundtrack soon, too!).

Dietland is one of the most impactful, unusual books I’ve ever read. Thank you Sarai!!

A great conversation! Somehow I have never heard of Dietland. Thank you for introducing me to Sarai and her writing.
What a fabulous interview and celebration of ten years of change making!!
