Heads up! Next Tuesday, July 8, I will be moderating a virtual conversation with Sarai Walker and Joy Nash, about the tenth anniversary of Dietland! I can’t wait to hang out with these two icons and you should absolutely join us. Register here.

What To Eat When Eating Feels Hard

We’ve had some excellent conversations about food here on Burnt Toast lately — first this chat of snack suggestions, and then in the comment section of the latest Indulgence Gospel, where we talked about what to eat when you don’t feel like eating.

As I said in that episode, I am a person who pretty much always feels like eating, though I very often don’t feel like cooking at all. But lots of people frequently don’t feel like eating, whether that’s due to life stress, neurodivergence, medication side effects, caregiving responsibilities, eating disorders, or really any other form of overwhelm. When life is a lot, it can be hard to give yourself permission to eat, and it can be hard to hear your hunger cues. Here’s my best friend, food blogger Amy Palanjian, explaining how she lost her appetite during her divorce.)

AND YET, we all still have to eat!

So I’ve combed through all of our comment threads and put together this giant list of easy snack and meal ideas. I’ve included links to any specific brand suggestions, and also organized this by level of ease.

We’ve got:

  • Snacks where all you need to do is open the container.

  • Snacks that combine a couple of ready-to-eat ingredients (maybe you’ll need to use the toaster)

  • Snacks that require use of the stove/extremely simple cooking and could also be dinner tonight.

  • Snacks that you could make ahead and stick in the freezer to have on hand and Future You will be SO impressed you did. (I’m so rarely this person but gosh, I aspire to be her!)
