Are We Diet-y About Screen Time?
Because I think I have some unlearning to do...
Hi friends! Just a very quick note to let you know that our January Live AMA is about to start, at 12pm Eastern.
As usual, I’m game to answer your questions AMA-style. We can talk diet culture, anti-fatness, parenting, fat fashion, #divorcelife, houseplants, you name it.
I’ll hang out until 1pm Eastern, when I have to go record a new podcast episode with Ash Brandin, better known as The Gamer Educator, which I am TERRIBLY excited about. My 10-year-old is deep into Animal Crossing right now and it is mostly delightful to see her light up about celebrating a tiny virtual penguin’s birthday but also I get very in my head about how many hours is too many hours and what is this game obsession replacing (and is it reading). But I watched this reel from Ash and realized: I’m still treating screens the way a lot of parents treat sugar.
I’m guessing I’m not alone here—especially because Resolution Culture means “screen detox” talk is everywhere right now!—so I thought this could be the focus of our chat today:
How do you feel about your relationship with screens and/or your kids’ relationship with screens right now?
Does your diet culture show up here? (And if so, what biases are driving that?) Or have you gotten to a more peaceful place with it all?
And if you, like me, mostly just have questions about this topic, drop them in the chat too! I’ll pass as many as I can on to Ash later this afternoon (and you’ll hear the episode in a few weeks!)
To join today’s discussion, you do need to be an Extra Butter subscriber.
It’s now just $99/year and you’ll also get bonus Indulgence Gospel episodes and other fun stuff — plus my eternal gratitude because this butter enables me to pay Corinne and Tommy for their invaluable contributions, offer podcast guest honorariums, and just generally keep the lights on around here.

PS. Thanks so much to all of you who joined/upgraded during last week’s sale. If you’ve been waiting on Cult of Perfect access, you should now have it! Continue to email me with any tech issues, and please CC support@substack.com so they’re aware of the various ongoing glitches we’re encountering here. (And big thanks to everyone for your patience as we beta test this whole thing!!)
