Last week, New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells announced that after 12 years of going out to eat every night of the week, he is stepping down and will no longer be writing weekly restaurant reviews for the paper. His reason: The job had made him “technically obese. OK, not just technically.”
Wells doesn’t give numbers, so “technically obese” is a little hard to parse. Does he wear straight sizes but have a BMI that recently ticked over from 29.9 to 30? Does he just “feel fat?” But one thing is clear: Wells doesn’t want to keep eating this way if it costs him his thin privilege.
