Oh, wow…the part about kids not being able to wear the same clothes as their peers made me “yes, yes” out loud. As an adult I’m not only plus size but also over 6 feet tall, and I can think of multiple occasions where standard girl shorts were a no go for me when wearing uniforms for cheerleading, softball, etc. Combine that with the evangelical school I was attending at the time, and there’s a lot to unpack there around body size and modesty and that whole mess.
Oh YES, so much to unpack. And wow, it just would not have been that hard for the adults around you to have made that less of a struggle. Thanks for sharing.
I loved this audio. Listening to this led me into a marathon listening session to SO MANY episodes of Maintenance Phase, a podcast (like this substack) that I wish I had had in my life before now.
I have a question for the mods or someone here with info on this audio: I am leading a breakout session as a part of my org's DEIA work, and I feel like this interview was an accessible and also really provocative discussion. I would like to know if there's a way to provide this audio to people who aren't subscribers. That might be impossible, and I totally understand. I'm not even sure if a discussion of thin privilege is something people in my org are interested/ready to talk about as a component of the DEIA work. But anyway, I thought I'd ask.
Hi Kiran! Thanks so much for reading/listening and yes, Maintenance Phase is amazing. Would be happy to talk about ways to bring this conversation to your organization -- email me (virginiasolesmith@gmail.com) and we can discuss options?
