I'm glad you reposted this--loved it both times I read it. I had just recently read a poem and thought, "This belongs in Burnt Toast" and then along came this post that provides a great place to share it.
Such a great convo! Another game rec, in the spirit of the ones you talked about -- So Clover. You get little tiles and have to think of a word that connects two other words. My 8 year old is really good at it -- he got "life pilot" recently and came up with therapist! 🤣
I’m glad you revisited this one! It’s that weird time of year where my daughter and I are at home for the week when usually we would be at school/work so I am appreciative that I have content to read that is new to me. Y’all always make me think with your conversations!
Thank you so much for re-sharing this. I'm among those who missed it last time, but has in recent months become such a fan of Lyz (and also her podcast). I've been divorced for over a decade now, and the freedom to eat without surveillance and control is still so vivid for me. And the contrast, as I am now in a loving and safe relationship where my new love is not at all interested in what I eat and also knows how to care for himself, is also palpable. As he has kids, I also appreciated the coparenting insights within. Just... many, many thanks all around! I have a feeling I'll listen to this one again.

"Disarmed" by Wendy Videlock
I should be diligent and firm,
I know I should, and frowning, too;
again you’ve failed to clean your room.
Not only that, the evidence
of midnight theft is in your bed—
cracked peanut shells and m&m’s
are crumbled where you rest your head,
and just above, the windowsill
is crowded with a green giraffe
(who’s peering through your telescope),
some dominoes, and half a glass
of orange juice. You hungry child,
how could I be uncharmed by this,
your secret world, your happy mess?

Oh I LOVE that.
