On the ice cream front, I live in Italy, where gelato is culture! It's not demonised or considered 'bad' but a normal snack for a child (adults too!); we go every day to the gelateria especially in the warmer months - it's also a way of getting through the hot summers here!
I'm not sure how this works exactly, but the smell of pumpkin loaf coming from the oven is drowning out the ice cream calling to me from the freezer. But the day is young
