I know I’m not the only one who is glad to have found this space. There are way too few ways to examine how diet culture thoroughly permeates society. I’m so happy that you are able to make a living doing this important work. Congratulations!
Really glad right now to have a place to vent! I’m sitting in the service department waiting for my oil change, and they have something on the tv with a super skinny girl adding zucchini to her oatmeal because she likes to eat “a lot of food” but not a lot of calories. Oh for fuck’s sake! I’m a captive audience here, I’m trying to work (today’s a remote day) and this girl just needs to STFU.
Thank you for the educational and affirming work you do! Looking back across the newsletter topics, I was most blown away by the newsletter on abortion is a fat rights issue -- I didn't know most of that information before and it's SO SO important! Most useful to me, though, was probably jeans science -- I don't know why I never previously thought of trying on jeans for a full day before deciding whether to keep. Revolutionary advice! ;) Thanks again.

Congratulations to you, Virginia! As a writer and former freelance journalist myself, you are an inspiration. As a fat mom myself, you are... also an inspiration! And a source of support. Love your work. - XO
Thank you for all your work! I am not at all surprised at how this community has grown. It is important and so necessary. I enjoy your writing immensely.
V, it is no surprise at all how amazing this newsletter has turned out to be. I hope you're finding satisfaction and fun in it. It's so great to get your unfettered knowledge and experience and curiosity. Keep up the amazing work.
I learned about this community via the NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour Podcast and decided to check it out. Love. Subscribed immediately. I also told myself that this month I needed to finally find and join a book club - I love reading and equally love discussing the books I'm reading but have no place to do the latter. And here we are - new to this community and already finding all the things!! So excited. Yay!
This comment isn't strictly specific to this post, but it is adjacent to book-talk! In case there are others who took note when you (Virginia) mentioned loving Julia Turshen (on the podcast, I think?), her cookbook Small Victories is available for *mazon *indle today for $2.99. (Total hats off to those of you who eschew that corporate behemoth in favor of local bookstores, which I try to support as well, just ... can't always fight that fight.)
Also, I love the bookclub plan! I Can't Even with the Jessamine Chan book because of my own baggage (adoptive parents are scrutinized by the state in a lot of the ways depicted in this novel, and I also have some Things To Say about this book's class politics). BUT I am definitely not here to piss on the parade of anyone who loves the novel; I'm so excited that the group is happening; and I hope to join in on the next go-round for some discussion with this fabulous community of politically smart and engaged peeps!
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the book's class politics but also understand if it's just too much to join our discussion. But stay tuned for the next one, for sure!

Thank you Annette! That means so much.

Thanks for the space.
OK zucchini in oatmeal is just plain wrong.
I know, right?!
A year late but I am finally a paid subscriber 🥳 Thank you for all you do, Virginia!
Leah! So glad to have you here!

Happy newsletter birthday! 🎉
Thanks so much!
Thank you for taking the leap and making this newsletter a reality. It has helped me so much and I know that I’m not alone.
Ps — as a millennial, I know what song I’ll be singing for the rest of the day! :)
So glad to hear this! (And sorry about the ear worm ;)
This newsletter has been the most helpful part of my new “no longer dieting” lifestyle. Thank you.
Thank you Megan!

Thank you for all the excellent early advice! Grateful for you, HWIC.
Happy one year!
Thanks, friend! xx
A bit of serendipity...

OMG, love it! And yes, our book club starts next month! So glad you're here.
I have so enjoyed the wide variety of topics you have covered over the last year and look forward to even more in the next!
Thank you so much!

Oh P.S.--I'm Gen X but listened to RENT on repeat through college, so we straight ;)
Ahaha yes, of course, RENT truly belongs to Gen X even more than Millennials though we claim it proudly.
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the book's class politics but also understand if it's just too much to join our discussion. But stay tuned for the next one, for sure!
