What Are You Reading Right Now?
Plus our next community episode and some doctors who get it.
I’ve been doing entirely too much pointless phone scrolling before I fall asleep lately, and not nearly enough reading. This is one of those annoying habits that should be very simple to fix just by using the phone charger I keep in the bathroom at night, instead of the one I shouldn’t even keep on my nightstand. But for whatever reason—not excited enough about the book I’m reading, too determined to reach Genius on Spelling Bee before I fall asleep (but then somehow I wind up watching TikTok for an hour), winter blues, you name it—I haven’t been fixing it. Which I say without judgment because not every “bad” habit requires fixing. But! Last weekend we went to Mexico and I deliberately didn’t buy plane wifi and then the wifi at our AirBnB didn’t work in the bedrooms and I was too lazy to figure out how to activate my international data plan. All of which rendered my phone delightfully useless and lead to me reading three delicious and cozy novels:
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall, as recommended by Corinne and especially fun if you are British, British-adjacent, or loved The Great British Bakeoff (I’m just the first two but sure, I can get into a cake contest).
Happy Place by Emily Henry because my bookseller friend slipped me an advanced copy. It comes out April 25 and if you love Emily Henry, go ahead and preorder because she’s doing everything she does best.
We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange, which was not a perfect book but great vacation reading and I will save my other thoughts to discuss with my Hot Tub Bookclub because they all read this.
And now I’m back in the reading groove! Have just started Phoebe’s Diary by the incomparable Phoebe Wahl and yes she’ll be on the pod to discuss and yes you should preorder that one right now.
But I realize it’s very annoying that I keep telling you about amazing books you can’t buy yet! So let’s do a book rec thread, because you all always deliver. Feel free to tell us what you’re loving and/or tell us what you want to be reading and we’ll crowd source some great recs. These book threads are gold, and I constantly refer back to them when I need new reads.
(As always, be cool and follow our Thread Ground Rules.)
We Need Your Voices!
We’re working on our next community episode and we need your audio! This one will explore what we mean when we say “fat.” Who gets to call themselves fat? And what if you just don’t want to be fat? We’re going to get into the Midsize Queens some more, as well as the other fun new TikTok trend of some fat content creators pursuing intentional weight loss and publicly distancing themselves from fat community. Yeah, it’s a mess! If you have thoughts, record a voice memo and email it to us at virginiasolesmith.assistant@gmail.com. (Here’s how to do it whether you have an iPhone or an Android.)
Friday Links & Recs
has been doing the most tireless work on the guidelines stuff, and she reported some encouraging responses from doctors over on this week. Just bought this (in gray, 1X) and may live in it till summer.
