What's In Your Bag?
You gotta have your snacks. Also: Rewear your outfits, the myth of mudrooms, and a very good dinner salad.
Friday Thread: What’s Your Goes Everywhere Snack?
Reliably delightful human Jennifer Garner made a reel recently about the contents of her bag: Glasses, pens, day planner, books she’s reading with her kids, an empty packet of Swedish fish and then… approximately 987 small bags of nuts. “I’m so scared I’m not going have any nuts,” she says.
She’s laughing, and it is hilarious. But anyone who has been on the diet in the last 50 years knows that carrying around little bags of nuts is what you do when you’re trying not to be hungry for other food. I’m not here to speculate about Jennifer Garner’s diet—guys, of course she’s dieting, she works in an industry that makes that a job requirement—and she’s obviously not endorsing an Almond Mom lifestyle. Plus, as with Girl Dinner, there is a more subversive, or at least, food positive read here because she’s not trying to go hungry. And FWIW, she’s also carrying around a decent candy supply in that bag. But yeah, just in case it needs to be said: Nuts are not lunch.
Anyway, just for fun: Tell us what’s in your bag? And/or which snacks you like to keep always to hand?
I’ll go first:
Bag, wallet (both Cuyana but ancient) pouch (for all the small stuff, J.Crew but ancient), Uncrustable, Advil Cold & Sinus, Throat Coat Tea, little yellow capsule for even more Advil #headachesforlife, inhaler, Aquaphor, car key, hand sanitizer, Airpods, prescription sunglasses. I get away with having such a small purse because I copied this life hack from
and now keep a fully stocked snack box and many other supplies in my car at all times. We’re currently packing Goldfish crackers, Lara Bars, Little Bites Muffins and some leftover Halloween Snickers, and it has been game-changing. But you can also always trust me to have an Uncrustable either in my purse, or somewhere on my person. (I’ll write my love letter to Uncrustables another time, but imo they are unmatched for a delicious, satisfying and portable snack! You can keep your granola bars. What about you?
PS. To show us your bag (and see inside everyone else’s, the best part!), you do need to be a paid Burnt Toast subscriber. Here’s how to join us! Do check out our thread rules if you’re a new commenter.
Friday Links & Recs
The girls and I voted unanimously for a fake Christmas tree this year, which is a big releasing of holiday labor for me, pls clap. I splurged on this one (then did the math on what we used to pay for same-sized fresh trees and it will actually save me money in about 2 years?!) and you know I bought this toaster ornament SO FAST. ICYMI,
is becoming a dahlia farmer. Also her new pod is SO GOOD. I said “holy shit” out loud more than once listening to the first episode.
I have been on the rewearing outfits train for a few years now, and gotta say, it is GREAT.
Keeping herbs fresh actually requires a mindset shift.
The perfect mudroom does not exist.
I’m wrapping up what was essentially a two week work week (work travel is great but not a weekend!), which has also featured a sick kiddo and a lot of disrupted sleep. After spending an hour in Wal-Mart waiting on an amoxicillin prescription last night, I came home starving and with no concrete dinner plan but I decided I deserved more than a non-meal and made this Buffalo Chickpea Salad from
and oh my goodness, was it exactly the right thing to do.Cult Report
Over on Cult, this week we’re unpacking the myth of the nuclear family, and so many stereotypes and misconceptions about single mothers, especially Black single motherhood, with the help of author
.Related, there is SO much single mom joy in this home tour. (Yes, it’s also very aspirational and styled, but I’m still taking notes.)
