What's Your Local Diet Culture?
It's time for the November Extra Butter Live Thread!
Hi friends! Just a very quick note to let you know that our November Live AMA is about to start, at 12pm Eastern.
And I am ESPECIALLY excited for this one because I have lost my fucking voice again (this happens to me a few times a year — it’s it stress? Is it kid germs?) so I have a lot of chattiness that can’t come out IRL right now but I sure can type!
As usual, I’m game to answer your questions AMA-style. We can talk diet culture, anti-fatness, parenting, fat fashion, #divorcelife, houseplants, you name it. I’ll hang out until 1pm Eastern, when I have to get back to finishing up tomorrow’s newsletter for you!
But I thought it would also be fun to ask you all a question this month. And I’ve been thinking about this conversation about fat friends, and how I admitted I don’t have a ton of IRL fat friends because I live in a very wealthy white yoga mom kind of place (which has a lot of good qualities too!). I also so often get messages from all of you asking about a particular diet that has become suddenly trendy in your neck of the woods, and they don’t always go national, which is fascinating.
So I’d love to know: What’s the diet culture like where you live?
Feel free to specify your geographic region and any relevant demographic information. Tell us what kind of body size diversity you encounter, what the diet trends and obsessions are (obviously without endorsing or sharing tips, pls)—and feel free to just go off about which parts are the most frustrating to navigate as a person in a body. I’m guessing this might be especially cathartic today, for anyone whose local diet culture has an invite to Thanksgiving this week?
To join the discussion, you do need to be an Extra Butter subscriber.
It’s just $120/year and you’ll also get bonus Indulgence Gospel episodes and other fun stuff — plus my eternal gratitude because that extra butter enables me to pay Corinne and Tommy for their invaluable contributions, offer podcast guest honorariums, and just generally keep the lights on around here.
