Virginia I’ve been a subscriber for about a year and a half now. And I’ve learned so much from you it’s been super valuable.
And my favorite thing about this newsletter is the people that I learn about who are so totally awesome! You are my main line drip to people that I need to know about that I probably would’ve never found otherwise. I’ve listened to Farideh’s album twice today and it’s made my life so much better
We get the Mental Load and the Motherhood of Sh*t too! Love how Farideh's songs sing truth to life and make me laugh too. Love all the great questions you ask and how you help your interviewees (?) relax and open up. I shared with a bunch of friends!
I made a dumb mistake and misclassified it! It’s fixed now, so I’m hoping it shows up in everyone’s feeds shortly (maybe after refreshing, etc…). Sorry about that!
Checking back to see if um, just leaving it be for the weekend helped?? The episode is now classified correctly so it SHOULD populate out to all the podcast players, but I can imagine every platform has it's own quirkly timeline for that kind of update... lmk and if not, we'll tap Substack for help.
Ah bummer. OK, will investigate! We may need to re-post the episode (which results in an extra email for everyone sorrysorrysorry) but I'll see what else I can figure out.
I have a galaxy brain hypothesis that songs about motherhood have been outsourced to religion, and in our society, specifically to songs about the virgin Mary. And which lay out so much of how women are expected to behave in a patriarchal society. Such as how "Ave Maria" is often translated as "Hail Mary, maiden mild." Or "Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child." Or "I sing of a maiden That is matchless, King of all kings, For her son she chose....Mother and maiden, There was never, ever one but she; Well may such a lady God's mother be." (that one is translated from old English).
Mothers, in that way, have most of the Christmas carols to themselves (can you tell I'm a musician and we've been working on this since August). But they aren't in ways that show difficulty or complexity. We can only compare ourselves to Mary, the world's greatest mother, whose actual mothering is never described.
This was delightful. Thank you both!
Farideh is a treat!

Yay! I loved this conversation so much. Thanks for sharing it!
Hmmm, this episode never showed up in my private (subscriber) feed on Apple Podcasts. Any idea what might have changed?

Still not showing up for me in PocketCasts, even after refreshing. Any idea what might be going on? Has it appeared for others?

Nope 😕 Just refreshed, rebooted, cleared cache, etc and still the latest one showing is 10/19.

Oh I'm here for this theory! You are totally right. We get religious songs which.. say nothing about our actual experience. Cool.
Just wanted to throw out my favorite song about motherhood, 'The Mother' by Brandi Carlisle. The music video is especially great!
OK, downloading immediately, THANK YOU
yessssssss
And YES 45 minute poops and vacation división of labor!
And also, I suspect there are lots like me who subscribe for the more cerebral/researched but interact more with the fun ones. :D
