I cannot thank you enough for sharing this worry and moment of vulnerability with us. I seriously thought I was the only one worrying about what I would wear when I started to see people again. This really helped me unpack that and resolve to dig deeper when those feelings arise AND to make that pact: compassion, compassion, and more compassion is what we all deserve right now from ourselves.
Finding a uniform is genuinely the best piece of fashion advice I have ever taken. It has saved me so much time and money over the years. If you do it right people just think it's your "signature style".
Black jeans or leggings, a plain black t-shirt or a plain black long sleeve thermal shirt (think Under Armor but without the logo), a cardigan or unbuttoned long sleeved shirt over top, a pair of boots and tada!
It's functional, it's fashionable, and I don't have to worry about if I look "fat" because I already know how everything looks.
I stay away from stuff with obvious logos to keep it seeming current, regardless of trends.
I will add that I think I get away with so much black because I have a bit of a Daria/aging goth vibe, but it genuinely saves me SO MUCH time!
I'm joining the chorus to thank you for this extremely timely and much-needed reminder Virginia! I do have a question for Shira (or anyone else who wants to chime in) about plus size fashion. I wear a size 22 (US Women's sizing), and tend to dress very casually for the most part. I feel very frustrated by how many garments are made with extremely thin, clingy material or polyester blends that look ratty after a few washings. But I don't even know where to look for good quality plus size clothes! A few people have suggested Universal Standard, but their casual stuff also tends to be made with thin, drapey, clingy material. Any ideas on where else I can look? Thank you so much!
Thank you so, so, so much for posting this and for all of the resources. It's such a relief to hear that it's okay to be in the body I'm in right now. I'm here for anyone and everyone who is going through anything similar.
This was reassuring to read. It's been really difficult to lean into what feels like a "new" body type. Last week I decided on a new basic style to go with it: baggy overalls with a plain basic tank top, a colorful scarf, earrings and perfume. The accessories make the vibe!
Gotta throw in @selltradeplus on IG for plus size fashion, second hand and really getting a handle on what your own measurements are to help figure out what will fit. Also she does weekly open discussions where you can ask other fat people what the fit is like on specific garments from specific brands. It's great!
I would love to hear about navigating swimsuits and active wear. I love swimming, but it's hard to find plus-sized training swimsuit. Almost everything is cut to be very modest, which means I can't really move around---those high cut legs make it so that I can actually move around, and kick! Similarly, I would love to wear sports bras + racerback tops for hiking, or yardwork, but I'm not sure where to start, particularly with how expensive active wear can be.

Yay! So glad this was helpful and pinky swearing with you! You are definitely not the only one worrying about this!
Oh and Marielle Elizabeth for fat fashion
Thank you these are both great leads!

Ooh, I want to know what your uniform is!
Omg I am so happy to share lol

I am VERY into this vibe.

Will definitely put this on the list for Shira. I'm so with you on the polyester blend problem!

Noted and putting it on my list! (I do have two sports bras I love -- I'll find links for next week!)
How did you know exactly what I needed to read? Huh, maybe because everyone needs to hear the same thing. Thank you.
I sure needed to read it.
