What's Your Cozy Fall Watch?
Why do my kids hate movie night, plus influencer dietitians, prairie girls, and why do we want all the things.
Friday Thread: What Are You Watching Right Now?
I have spent my kid’s entire childhood trying to make Family Movie Nights happen as some kind of regular ritual, and failing spectacularly for a variety of reasons. It took years for them to both build up the screen attention span to movie length; we have a lot of “no thank you” plot points to avoid like no scary monsters, and for awhile no scenes of people missing trains; or we can just never agree on what to watch.
But! The tide is starting to turn at ages 10 and almost-6, and we have recently watched and loved: Freaky Friday (you will have to press pause for a little racism and anti-fatness), The Parent Trap: Lindsey Lohan Edition (you will have to press pause to admire every Chessy outfit), Turning Red, and Matilda The Musical (yes I have a lot of thoughts on Bruce and Ms. Trunchbull but mostly liked how the new version handles it all!). And my 10-year-old and I have worked our way through Gilmore Girls and The Good Place, and are now enjoying Modern Family (though man, The Good Place is proving HARD TO TOP with my little comedy snob!).
So for a fun almost-fall Friday Thread: What’s on your cozy fall watching list?
This can be TV or movies or idk favorite cozy TikToks? Bonus points for family-friendly but we can also define “cozy fall watch” more broadly and get away from kid stuff altogether. (Though I am curious if anyone else has trouble selling their kids on movie nights and if so WHY, I thought screen time was supposed to unequivocally make my life easier??)
PS. To get all the fall show recs, you do need to be a paid Burnt Toast subscriber. Here’s how to join us! Please check out our thread rules if you’re a new commenter.
PPS. ICYMI, we had THE MOST FUN live thread on Wednesday night. You can catch up on the whole thing here. We’ll do it again next month, this time for Extra Butters only, so factor that into your subscription decision today!
Friday Links & Recs
I will say: Cozy furry blankets seem to help my Family Movie Night marketing. We have some old ones from Target, but I’m also eyeing these.
We are 75 percent of the way towards this year’s Burnt Toast Giving Circle goal, which is to raise $15,000 to flip Virginia blue. Everything is on the line in VA: Abortion rights, voting rights, climate change. Also: If you set up a recurring donation (even a tiny one!) here, you can then give yourself permission to ignore your inbox's many political money asks. You've done your part, smartly.
Grateful as always to
dropping everything to give us a rapid response to the latest Kids Eat In Color shenanigans. (If you’re like, but wait I love KEIC? Or who the heck is KEIC? start here.)Related, oh my lord, the many layers of this piece on influencer dietitians. (gift link!)

JFC, I have been blissfully ignoring the existence of Ashton Kutcher and it turns out he’s horrendous? (As were all of the 1990s and early 2000s for women.)

I’m also adding the link to this week’s BT Guide, but
